Circling Pacific Northwest

Deepening Connection

Circling is a powerful relational practice that fosters genuine connection and deepens our understanding of ourselves and others. Here at Circling Pacific Northwest, we weave together this practice with my three decades of experience in meditation, loving-kindness, and trauma-informed approaches.

Imagine Circling as a conversational meditation. We move beyond small talk and mindfully step into the present moment, fostering a safe space for authentic sharing and deep listening. It’s about cultivating empathic presence, where we truly connect with another person’s experience without judgment.

Circling draws inspiration from the Original Circling® Approach as outlined by the Circling Institute and Circling Europe. This framework provides a foundation for open communication, emotional intelligence, and fostering trust within the circle.

The Five Principles of Circling

Commitment to Connection: Staying connected with whatever arises between you and others, revealing yourselves and being open to the impacts on and from others. This principle invites deep inquiry and presence with what is actually here, rather than reacting habitually or avoiding discomfort.

Trusting Experience: Embracing and surrendering to what is true in each moment. This includes trusting non-rational, embodied experiences and recognizing the wisdom in whatever arises, even if it’s beyond our understanding.

Owning Your Experience: Taking responsibility for your own feelings and perceptions. This means speaking from your own direct experience and not projecting onto others, fostering a deeper inquiry into the relationship between perception and reality.

Staying with the Level of Sensation: Being present with subtle bodily sensations as they arise. This principle helps uncover deeper truths and presence by including the body’s immediate experiences in awareness and expression.

Being with the Other in Their World: Deeply appreciating and being curious about the other person’s experience. This principle encourages meeting others exactly as they are, with a sense of wonder and innocence, fostering profound connection and understanding.
